09/10/2014

The annual event has been running for five years and features teams made up from University staff and businesses.

A total of 18 teams took part at Perton Golf Club and a total of £1,811.69 was raised in aid of the Mayor of the City of Wolverhampton’s Charity appeal.

Mayor, Councillor Mike Heap accepted a cheque in the Mayor’s Parlour from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer and event organiser Paul Hampton.

The money will go towards the Mayor’s three nominated charities- Mencap Wolverhampton, Breast Care Nurses Trust Fund at New Cross Hospital and Wolverhampton Interfaith and Regeneration Network.

Councillor Heap said: “It was a great day out and I am delighted that the proceeds have been donated to the Mayoral Charities.

“It is a magnificent sum, a record amount, and a great effort from all involved at the University. Tremendous credit has to go to everyone involved, particularly those that organised the event.

“The money is very welcome and will be gratefully received by my nominated charities.”

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “The golf day has gone from strength to strength every year and each year got bigger and better.

“It’s really important that the University plays an active role in the local community and it’s fantastic we are able to support three Wolverhampton charities in this way.”

Sponsors for the event included Stratstone Jaguar, Thomas Vale, QSI International, Severn Trent Water, DMW and WLV Alumni Association, Wolverhampton Business Solutions, Cardinal Griffin School, Wolverhampton Homes, Flour, Shaylor, Robert Rock Academy, and Faithful and Gould.

Paul Hampton, from the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering organised the event. He said: “It was a great day and nice to be able to bring together people at the University with businesses and other partners for good causes.

“I’d like to thank all those people who were involved and all those companies which were so generous by pledging support, sponsorship or prizes.”
