International interest for innovative web based app

20/07/2015

A web based app created by the University of Wolverhampton to help deaf media professionals across Europe has been showcased internationally.

The SignMedia SMART glossary APP, a glossary for media related terminology, was piloted at a Deaf festival - Festival Clin d'Oeil - in Reims, France.

The innovative technology enables better communication, giving users the signs for media related terms in British, Austrian, Italian or Swedish Sign Language. It also gives the written word in English, German, Italian or Swedish for a sign used in the broadcasting industry.

The app is part of SignMedia SMART a two-year project being led by the Faculty of Arts which aims to enhance the career prospects and mobility of Deaf Media professionals in Europe by providing access to media terms on the move and throughout the production process, from shooting on location to editing in post production.

During the festival, the project  team  ran a seminar,  that sold out and was attended by 120 people,  which introduced the project, the app, gave a masterclass on how to use it and gave people the opportunity to test the app.

Extensive testing also took place on the project stand and there was also a lot of interest in developing the SignMedia SMART glossary app in French sign language.

Associate Dean, Enterprise, Knowledge Transfer and Research and Head of Wolverhampton School of Art (Est. 1851), Samantha Hope, said:  ”Attending the festival in Reims was the culmination of two years development work and an opportunity to disseminate the project and glossary app in a country outside the existing project consortium. We received a great deal of attention at the festival with a work shop ‘sell out’, packed demonstrations at our stand and interviews by several French film crews to be screened after the event. Feedback was very positive, and we hope this leads to extensive use of the app and further development of SignMedia SMART into new languages.”

Wolverhampton’s partners in the programme are Klagenfurt University, Austria ALBA, Italy, European Sign Language Centre, Sweden, Bellyfeel Limited, UK and Mutt & Jeff Pictures Ltd, UK

The project has been funded with support from the EU Lifelong Learning Programme and is a Leonardo Transfer of Innovation project.
