‌‌Ben Reid OBE

Appointed as the Chair of the Board of Governors in August 2019

A Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and Institute of Co-operative Directors, Ben Reid worked within the public sector, notably health and local authority services, before entering the world of mutuality with Nottingham Building Society in 1980. Since then, Ben has served the Co-operative Movement at the highest level in a number of roles culminating in the role Group Chief Executive Officer of the Midcounties Co-operative, employing over 9,000 staff with an annual turnover of £1.5 billion covering nine different business sectors. In 2015 he led The Co-operative to achieve the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

Ben’s inclusive style of leadership, and commitment to the lasting values of co-operation and mutuality, have led to him being much in demand by organisations where the ethics of service and social responsibility are paramount.

In September 2012 Ben was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Wolverhampton, in recognition of his leadership of wide-ranging social enterprise initiatives throughout the West Midlands. He joined the University’s Board of Governors in March 2013. In August 2017 Ben was appointed Deputy Chair and took up the role of Chair in August 2019.

Ben has a strong personal commitment to higher education. He also shares the vision and aspirations of the University to achieve national and international excellence, and the business drivers needed to underpin this.

In 2010 Ben was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his service to business and to the community in Walsall, West Midlands. He retains a number of directorship roles.
