17/12/2013

A graduate nurse from the University of Wolverhampton is planning to scale a Canadian mountain to raise money for charity.

Suzanne Payne, who works in the intensive care unit at the City Hospital in Birmingham has signed up to raise money for the West Midlands-based nursing charity, Cavell Nurses' Trust.

The 21-year-old, who qualified in adult nursing at the University of Wolverhampton in September, has signed up to climb Mount Edith Cavell in the Canadian Rockies.

Cavell Nurses' Trust, which is also named after First World War nursing heroine Edith Cavell, Suzanne Payneis looking for 100 intrepid ambassadors to scale the 3,363 metre peak in August 2015 - the 100th anniversary of her death in German-occupied Belgium.

The national nursing charity, based in Redditch, Worcestershire, has organised the mountain climb as part of its Centenary Appeal - which aims to raise £3 million to double the number of beneficiaries it currently supports.

Suzanne said: "Edith Cavell was a true heroine of World War One and her compassion, beliefs and true determination inspired many others around her.

"I receive emails from the Cavell Nurses’ Trust and there was a link to the mountain climb, so I decided that was something for me as it's a good challenge and the Trust is a good charity. I just like new challenges and to keep pushing myself with new things."

An initial £200 is needed to pay for two special training courses in June next year. This will go towards the overall cost of the Mount Edith Cavell climb. On completion of the climb a certificate of achievement will be awarded.

People can sign up for the Mount Edith Cavell climb, or other fundraising events, by calling Freephone 0808 1234 999 or by emailing Vicky on events@cavellnursestrust.org
