Prestigious International Award for Scientist

A University of Wolverhampton scientist has received a prestigious global award for his outstanding contribution in the field of advanced materials and technology.

Dr Arun Arjunan has been named the Young Scientist of the Year 2018 by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM).

The award is an honorary accreditation in recognition of Dr Arjunan’s research in the field of advanced acoustic materials and technology.

His research in Customisable Acoustic Interference Cavities has developed a noise reduction technology that is customisable and scalable, depending upon the frequency of the source noise. Dr Arjunan’s research has developed a proof-of-concept in his laboratory that has seen frequency dependent noise reduction values of up to 72.47dB, which is significantly higher than any existing noise reduction technologies. The technology can be implemented into any material and Dr Arjunan’s aim is to incorporate the technology into common building materials allowing the future of smart building infrastructure that is fit for purpose but also reduce noise pollution.

The other area of research he has been recognised for is Acoustic performance of Glass Filled Composites. This is a relatively new 3D printing material that is increasing in popularity due to its elevated stiffness and heat resistance properties. At the lower frequency range, structural stiffness plays a significant role in preventing sound transmission and is of interest to the acoustic materials research community.

The reviewers and panel members considered Dr Arjunan’s research as a notable and longstanding contribution to the field of advanced materials and technology.
