Flying accolade for teacher training success

In recognition of his commitment to a Teacher Training programme that has been running for nearly 20 years, a University of Wolverhampton lecturer has been presented with one of RAF Cosford's highest civilian awards.

The Commandant’s Commendation was presented to John Chorley, 66 from Wednesbury, by Wing Commander Tim Mason.

Approximately 600 personnel from Cosford have graduated from the Certificate in Education, or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, both of which are still being offered by the University 'in house' on the RAF Station, in Albrighton to both RAF personnel and civilian instructors based at RAF Cosford. Many graduates have carried on with their studies to gain Bachelor of Arts degrees in post-compulsory Education, Master's degrees and some have even started their Doctorate studies. 

John recently retired from the Institute of Education at the University of Wolverhampton, having been part of Teacher Training at Walsall Campus since 1986.  He is now teaching part time on the undergraduate Aeronautical Engineering programme at Telford Innovation Campus, Priorslee.

"My 20 years of teaching RAF aircraft instructors, combined with my Pilot's licence and Class Rated Instructor's rating has been really useful in preparing and delivering a first year aeronautical principles module, and I have also taken some of the undergraduate students flying at RAF Cosford."

The links that John has developed have been extended to University sponsorship of the RAF Cosford Air Show, which annually attracts 57,000 visitors. On Sunday 10th June Cosford will be the only RAF Air show to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the RAF, with over 100 RAF aircraft on display.
