New emergency and disaster management course launched

04/12/2018

A new course designed to prepare people for responding to terrorist incidents and natural and man-made disasters has been launched by the University of Wolverhampton.

The new BSc (Hons) Emergency and Disaster Management is aimed at those hoping to work in the emergency services, the military, health agencies, local and national government and international aid organisations.

The first students will start in September 2019 and will be taught at the Telford Campus in a purposely designed room within the Emergency Management and Resilience Centre.

The new degree follows on from the success of the University’s Master’s level Emergency Planning, Resilience and Response course, which has been running for six years.

Heather Gumsley, Lecturer in Emergency Planning, said: “The course is aimed at undergraduates interested in improving the response to natural and man-made disasters such as terrorism, earthquakes and floods. Once students have completed the degree, they could find themselves going into employment in all aspects of emergency planning or disaster management, whether that is within the emergency services, military, local and national government, the private sector or utility companies.

“The course covers issues such as risk, business continuity, the causes of disasters and the theory behind this, communication, response and recovery, from both a UK and international perspective.

“The purposely designed room we have within the Emergency Management and Resilience Centre at the Telford Campus will allow for interactive group work, and we have recently bought some simulation software which will be used to fully enhance the learning experience.”

Students will take part in interactive work in tutorials and group work, completing assignments, exams and presentations.
