Inspirational student nurses shortlisted for awards

13/03/2018

Inspirational student nurses from the University of Wolverhampton are celebrating after being shortlisted for national awards in recognition of their commitment.

The University has been shortlisted in four categories of the Student Nursing Times Awards, which celebrate the best in nurse education.

In the running for Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year is mature Adult Nursing student Dominic Allan, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer during the second year of his studies. The committed father-of-two underwent radiotherapy while also continuing with his lectures, and even went on to complete his practice hours.

The 35-year-old from Stourbridge said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted for the most inspirational student nurse of the year. I have faced many challenges in the last 12 months, but with an amazing network of family, friends and professional colleagues I have been able to achieve success and become a role model to inspire fellow students.”

Shortlisted for Student Nurse of the Year: Learning Disabilities is Elizabeth Bailey, who has been an advocate for learning disability nursing at a national level including at forums such as the Royal College of Nurses (RCN) Congress.

Elizabeth, 28, from Welshpool, Powys, said: “I am really excited and thankful to have been shortlisted for this award because I am passionate about Learning Disability nursing and I feel that as students we can, and do, make a difference to the people we support. I am keen to advocate that students can put themselves out there and advocate on both an individual and national level.”

Cara Large, from Kingswinford, is also celebrating after being shortlisted in the Student Nurse of the Year: Adult category.

The 35-year-old reflected on her experiences during a clinical placement to have her work published in leading journal, Nursing Standard.

She said: “I was absolutely made up to have the article published - completely shocked and blown away. I never actually thought people would want to read something I had written, so it’s amazing to now be nominated for an award.”

The University’s work with the Dudley Group of Hospitals is also shortlisted in the Student Experience category. The nomination recognises the Dudley Group’s learning disability simulation facilities, which provide positive student experience to learning disability nursing students from the University while they are on placement.

The Student Nursing Times Awards will take place on Thursday, 26 April 2018 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
