Question time for the future shape of health and social care

The future shape of the region’s health and social care will be debated at a Question Time style event at the University of Wolverhampton.

Students, service users and carers will join a panel of influential speakers with extensive experience from across the NHS, public and voluntary sectors to take part in the conference on Monday, 12 March 2018 from 9.30am-2.30pm.

The event at the Arena Theatre at the Wolverhampton City Campus is aimed at health and social care students, lecturers, service users and their carers and practice partners.

Hosted by the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing’s SUCCESS group, the annual showcase and conference will discuss the challenges facing the NHS and feature questions from the audience. It will also showcase examples of co-production between the SUCCESS group and the Faculty.

Dr Alex Hopkins, Dean of the Faculty of Education Health and Wellbeing, said: “I am delighted that our service user and carer group has pulled together this exciting opportunity for our students to examine the changing healthcare landscape.

“The conference and debate will consider how the NHS and social care will rise to the challenge of bringing together physical and mental health and balance the demands of an aging population with reduced resources and budgets.”

Speakers at the ‘Health and Social Care – the future?’ event include:

  • Sue Harris - Director of Leadership and Organisational Development, Health Education England
  • Councillor Sandra Samuels OBE – Cabinet Member for Adults, City of Wolverhampton Council
  • Dr Helen Hibbs – Chief Officer for Wolverhampton Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Judy McDonald – Deputy Director of Nursing, Black Country Partnership Foundation Trust
  • Andy Rust – Assistant Director and Strategic Lead, Walsall Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Davina Lytton – Chief Officer, Age UK Walsall
  • Brendan Clifford – Service Director for City Health, City of Wolverhampton Council

Rupy Pandaal, Faculty Service User and Carer Strategy Coordinator, added: “Key contributors from across the sector will give their perspectives on the challenges faced and then take questions from an audience of health and social care students, service user and carers, lecturers and Faculty partners.

“This is the 6th annual conference event that’s been put together for and by our SUCCESS group of service users/carers which will showcase some of the innovative co-production work they support to enhance the teaching and learning of our students.”

About the SUCCESS group

  • The Faculty of Education Health and Wellbeing is proud of its’ ever growing reputation for service user and carer involvement through its SUCCESS group. Founded on our strategy called “Shared experiences, learning together” which was launched in 2010,  service user and carer involvement is firmly embedded across all professional programmes in health and social care.
  • The SUCCESS group was initially formed in 2012 and has around 60 service users and carers who support the work of the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing through:
    • helping with student selection and admissions
    • contributing to teaching and assessments
    • helping to design and redesign courses
    • quality assurance and review
    • collaborative skills development
    • developing resources
    • supporting research
  • The SUCCESS group has been commended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council in recent programme validations the Faculty of Education Health and Wellbeing.
