The University of Wolverhampton is raising funds to support student nurses who are struggling financially as part of #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday is a national day on Tuesday, 27 November 2018 which encourages people to do something good for charity.

This year, to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS and to thank the thousands of nurses who have trained at the University and gone on to make a difference to the people they encounter every day, the University is launching a fundraising appeal for a nursing bursary.

The University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing trains approximately  1000 nurses every year, across the fields of adult, children, mental health and learning disability nursing.

Previously nursing students were eligible for a national bursary from the Government towards their studies but this is no longer available.  The role is extremely demanding and any financial assistance towards learning costs would help enormously.

Dr Alex Hopkins, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, said: “No matter which speciality they take on, whether they work in a hospital or in the community, if they focus on care of children or older adults, nurses touch all our lives and have a hugely positive impact on the people they serve.

“Their role is challenging and rewarding - they improve the quality of life for people with short and long term conditions and most importantly, they provide support, care and skilled interventions at times of great need.

“Our aim through this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign is to raise funds for a nursing bursary to help student nurses who are struggling financially.”

Generous donors like Mary and Gary Rauchfuss have made a gift in memory of Mary’s mother, Joan Argyle Shambaugh, who lived in Tettenhall and dreamed of being a nurse.

Mary Rauchfuss says: “My mother was born into a poor family in Wolverhampton and had five siblings.  She wanted to be a nurse but the family didn’t have funds to send her to school.  She passed away last year and we wanted to do something to remember her by.”

The Joan Argyle Shambaugh Bursary in Nursing is already helping student nurses, and through the generosity of staff, students and the public the University can support more nurses and the incredible role they do.
