New drama degree provides direct path to teaching

The University of Wolverhampton has launched a new degree combining drama and Secondary Education - the first course of its kind in the UK.
The Bachelor of Arts Drama with Secondary Education (Qualified Teacher Status) offers students the chance to study drama degree alongside secondary education providing a direct route into teaching.
The new course gives students the opportunity to develop their performance skills and drama specific knowledge through participation in workshops, lectures and public performances. Students will also learn how to facilitate teacher-led debates, pupil-led exploration and peer-group discovery through placement learning in a range of schools and education settings.
Claire Hampton, Drama Course Leader and Senior Lecturer at the University, said: “Usually on completion of a degree, if people want to teach they need to complete a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) but we’ve incorporated at least 120 days of teaching time spent at a range of schools over the three years.
“This new degree will allow students to study for a degree in drama whilst simultaneously preparing for a career in teaching. Successful students will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status that allows them to enter the education sector immediately following graduation.
“The subject specific drama teaching on this course, which includes physical theatre, voice work, applied drama, script writing, devising and scenography, will also enable students to pursue alternative career options outside of teaching. The expertise and transferrable skills that students receive will prepare them well for a variety of creative industry career pathways.”
The degree is available from September 2018 and will be delivered at the University of Wolverhampton’s Performance Hub at the Walsall Campus.
