A new course to improve the language skills of international healthcare professionals is to be launched by the University of Wolverhampton.

The Occupational English Test (OET) is designed to assess the language and communication skills of healthcare staff who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking environment.

The University of Wolverhampton is the first UK university to become an approved preliminary preparation provider since the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Medical Council (GMC) started to recognise OET results as proof of English language proficiency.

The International Academy, based at the Telford Campus, is launching a fully online OET preparation course from September which will enable healthcare professionals from around the world to access expert teaching.

The University is also holding a series of OET workshops starting on 9 April 2019 which are aimed at healthcare professionals wishing to find out more about the exam and gain some exam practice and advice. It will also be offering a writing feedback service.

Gill Outterside, OET Co-ordinator at the University, said: “We are excited about becoming an OET Preparation centre and developing our portfolio of courses at the International Academy. Currently there are no other UK universities who are approved teaching centres since the OET gained approval by the NMC and GMC, and we are looking forward to developing further projects.”
