Sports psychologist analyses Wolves’ semi-final hopes

04/04/2019

Sports psychologist Professor Andy Lane offers expert insights into Wolves’ hopes in this weekend’s FA Cup semi final against Watford.

“Getting to the FA Cup semi-final and going to Wembley is a real landmark for Wolves and it’s going to be a great occasion. The fans from the West Midlands and beyond will be really behind them and really looking forward to it.

“The pressure is on them – they’ve got a great chance of getting to the final and a really good chance of winning the competition.

“Wolves have done really well against the big teams so they wouldn’t have been too worried who they got and the expectation will be on them to play to the top of their game which might put a bit of extra pressure on them, but really they should see this as a great opportunity to get to the final.

“They will have a plan and will know the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition so what they will be doing now is shifting their focus to those short term goals so they do what is necessary for the team.

“As a player and as a fan, this is what football is all about. Nerves and excitement – physically they feel very similar in terms of your blood is pumping, so this what they should be enjoying.

“This is a time to savour.”
