Teachers get switched on at Google conference

The University of Wolverhampton switched local teachers on to the latest developments in Maths and Computer Science at a Google UK sponsored conference held in Telford recently.

The School of Maths & Computer Science held its first MaSCoT (Maths and Computer Science Teachers) conference for staff who teach the subjects at local schools and colleges.

The ‘Creating Engagement in the Digital Classroom’ conference included workshops and plenary presentations from industry and educational experts who have been recognised for their digital technology expertise and innovation.

Key speakers attended the event included Portia Tung, author, executive coach and founder of The School of Play, Brian Byrne who has worked with technology for over forty years and Henri Kuiper, a consultant and technical specialist.

The two day event was held at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus and consisted of interactive, hands-on workshops designed to help teachers enhance their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) curriculum.

Dr Herbert Daly, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University, said: “We know that STEM is an area that’s becoming increasingly important and we’re keen to help local schools and colleges gain the benefits of the relationships we have with the rest of the world.

“We’ve spoken about how they might deliver the curriculum, they’ve had a go with the latest technologies and there was something for everyone here.”

Henri Kuiper, industry expert, said: “I think it’s important for teachers to see the result of their teaching and how it ends up.  I have a lot of experience to share to make somewhat boring material more interesting – I’ve shown them how to make programming more interesting.  I think it lights a little spark of doing things differently and that’s infectious by itself.”
