05/06/2019

The University of Wolverhampton is to lead on a prestigious €3 million arts sector grant, it has been announced.  It is the first of its kind at the University and a first within the Europe Innovative Training Network.

The Future of European Independent Art Spaces in a Period of Socially Engaged Art (FEINART) will pioneer a new approach to art education.

It is the first interdisciplinary and holistic investigation of the democratic role and function of socially engaged art in Europe.

Designed by Principal Investigator Prof John Roberts (Faculty of Arts) and Dr Francesco Paradiso (Faculty of Arts Knowledge Transfer Team), FEINART is a training and research programme which will pioneer a new approach to art education and is unique in its kind. The project is an extensive collaboration between degree-awarding research centres in political philosophy, art theory/practice and curatorial studies cultural management, and the independent European art sector.

The Faculty of Arts received funding for the project from the highly competitive Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks strand. The University will train 11 Early-Stage Researchers in order to provide the relevant skills to engage with the challenges of this new artistic and cultural landscape.

Sam Hope, Associate Dean for Knowledge Transfer and Outreach in the Faculty of Arts, said: " I would like to very much congratulate Prof John Roberts and Dr Francesco Paradiso for this brilliant result, which is unprecedented within the European Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Network programme. Their hard work has paid off.”

"FEINART is the result of successful strategic interventions implemented by myself and the Knowledge Transfer Team aimed to build confidence and harness talent within the Faculty of Arts, which is yielding results.

"This is a major achievement of our Faculty, which has a track record of consortium project development and delivery and innovative Knowledge Transfer projects, but a project of such scale and ambition is a first within the arts and culture disciplines at the University.”
