Student volunteering pioneer recognised

13/09/2019

A former lecturer who led the way in gaining recognition for students who volunteer as part of their studies has been honoured by the University of Wolverhampton.

Dr Pat Green is renowned for developing a pioneering practice for accredited student volunteering with not-for-profit organisations.

She received an Honorary Fellowship at a graduation ceremony at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on Friday, 13 September 2019.

Pat said: "Just over thirty years ago, when I started the accredited volunteering programme here, little did I think that I would be receiving such an award from the University of Wolverhampton. It is has been an honour to have been able to develop the programme for students to combine academic learning with applied volunteering which contributes to the community in so many ways."

Pat Green graduated in 1986 and returned to the University of Wolverhampton in 1990 as a researcher and lecturer.

She developed the pioneering practice in accredited student volunteering with not-for-profit organisations for which she has become renowned: Volunteering in the Curriculum.

Its enormous success led to the development of Volunteer Central within the University, which continues to provide thousands of volunteering opportunities for students every year.

This work has led to the University developing a national and international reputation as a key provider of accredited volunteering.

Upon Pat's retirement from teaching in 2015, the University established the Pat Green Prize for Accredited Volunteering.

She successfully completed her doctoral research on the politics of student volunteering in 2018.

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.

The University's graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday, 12 September to Friday, 20 September 2019.
