Sports success for Wolverhampton students

University of Wolverhampton students scooped a total of 10 medals at the national championships in Sheffield.

Teams and individuals from all over the country descended on the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Nationals.

The University of Wolverhampton took five gold, three silver and two bronze with the judo team leading the way with nine out of the 10 medals.

Judo gold went to Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Women’s Under 70kg), Ebony Drysdale-Daley (Women’s Under 78kg), Dan Powell (Men’s Under 73kg) and Acelya Toprak (Women’s Under 57kg).

Silver medals were won by Jodie Caller (Women’s Under 57kg), Molly Storey (Women’s Under 52kg) and bronze medals by Michelle Boyle (Women’s +78kg) and Elin Lloyd (Women’s Under 78kg).

The women’s judo team of Ebony Drysdale-Daley, Acelya Toprak and Kelly Petersen-Pollard also took gold in the judo team event while Amy Hillyard took silver on the track in the women’s 400m.

“Each year we are achieving success on a regional and national level and building our reputation as a University which takes sport seriously and has a lot to offer those who want to become elite athletes.”
