Business moguls zoom into new careers

06/06/2019

Business moguls of the future are hoping to zoom into successful careers after completing a mentoring scheme at the University of Wolverhampton.

The Institute of Directors Student Mentoring scheme aims to link up business students with leading figures from the region who act as mentors to support our students in finding the job of their dream in their final year. Students are able to seek advice and encouragement from a Senior Manager, Director or Chief Executive who communicates regularly with them during their final year.

The latest cohort of students celebrated completing the scheme with a special event at Westfield Sportscars in Kingswinford.

23 of the 40 student mentees and 10 mentors toured the factory and learnt about new innovations in the car industry including mud guards made of hemp (!) and the importance of collaborative leadership from the Managing Director, Julian Turner. Later the students and the mentors received certificates for taking part and thank you gifts were presented to the mentors too.

The Chair of the IoD West Midlands, Brian Hall and the Regional Director of the IoD West Midlands, Calum Nisbet, handed out the certificates and praised the students on their hard work and dedication.

Dr Jenni Jones, Associate Professor in Coaching and Mentoring within the University of Wolverhampton Business School, said: “This is the 9th year we have run the Business School Mentoring programme and we have now supported over 250 students towards their career aspirations. At the event, we learnt that many students have received job offers as a direct result of the support and attention given by their mentors, including a graduate position at KPMG. Next year is the 10th year of the programme and we are hoping to double the numbers and double the support.”

Developed by the University of Wolverhampton Business School in conjunction with the Institute of Directors, the scheme has helped over 250 students.

The next cohort will start in October 2019.
