Race and rights expert to present guest lecture

A leading expert in race and rights is to visit the University of Wolverhampton to present a lecture to mark Black History Month.
Dr Karen Salt from the Centre for Research in Race and Rights at the University of Nottingham will visit Wolverhampton on Thursday, 25 October 2018.
The free public lecture will take place in room MH002 in the Mary Seacole Building at City Campus Molineux from 12.30pm-2pm.
Her talk is titled The Unfinished Revolution: Haiti, Black Sovereignty and Power in the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World.
The lecture will be chaired by Dr Shirin Housee, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for Sociology at Wolverhampton, and author of Speaking Out against Racism in the University Space (2018).
She said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Salt to the University of Wolverhampton to present the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Black History Month lecture.
“In this lecture Dr Salt will examine the charged upheaval that Haiti’s arrival caused in the Atlantic world. She will reflect on the ways that brokers from Haiti and across the Atlantic responded to the political existence of a nation forged from the fires of revolution and consistently racialized as black by other nation-states.”
Dr Karen Salt is Assistant Professor in Transnational American Studies and directs the Centre for Research in Race and Rights at the University of Nottingham. She directs the Black Studies PhD programme at the University of Nottingham. She is an expert on sovereignty, race, collective activism and systems of governance.
