Update from Team Physio!

The University launched a new BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course at the Walsall Campus in October 2017. Here Course Leader and former professional footballer Troy Douglin, who is also a part-time Physio at Wolves FC Academy, reflects on some of the highlights of the first year and looks ahead to the next phase of the popular course.

This year we sponsored Wolves FC Academy again and the club has continued to excel incredibly. I was part of the team who supported the under 14s in winning the Premier League Albert Phelan Competition at St Georges Park (England FA’s training base). In doing so we beat Swansea, Chelsea, Norwich and Blackburn Rovers in the final.

Many of the squad were then selected to travel to China for the Youth International Challenge Cup. Unfortunately we only came 4th behind Benfica of Portugal, Sao Paulo of Brazil and Osaka of Japan. However, the trip was still a relative success with a trip to the Fosun Group Headquarters in Shanghai. We met the new club owner Guo Guangchang who was passionate about the value of working hard, teamwork and having a purpose.

We now hope to build on the success of working with Wolves last year by increasing opportunities for our new Physiotherapy students to learn and gain experience with more physios within the club.

In November our new Lecturer Dr Paula Agostini will be presenting in Milan on rehabilitation following Cardiothoracic Surgery. This is huge for us as we haven’t even completed our first iteration yet, but Paula will be presenting on the international stage so really highlights the strength of the programme.

We’re hoping to get Walsall FC in again and want to get much more student involvement in elite sport. They have agreed to give our students some four-week block placements to experience what it is like to work as a physiotherapist in that environment.
