Life in Wolverhampton

If you’re looking for multiculturalism and a dynamic urban environment without the London price-tag, then Wolverhampton may be right for you!

The city has plenty of restaurants and cafés offering cuisine from around the world. The Museums, Galleries and Archives of Wolverhampton mean you’re never short of things to do: Wolverhampton Art Gallery welcomes visitors to explore over 300 years of art and holds one of the largest Pop Art collections outside of London, the Arena Theatre at City Campus is the University’s own theatre. It’s intimate and atmospheric, hosting plays and dance exhibitions from local and national companies, as well as our own students.

Just a short walk away is The Grand Theatre, the place to go for opera, ballet and national touring productions, as well as the annual pantomime.  Next to the University’s Faculty of Arts building you’ll find Molineux Stadium, home to the Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. You’ll also find fitness facilities at City and Walsall Campuses, including floodlit football pitches, sports courts/halls and gyms.

For the quieter side of life, you can go for a walk through Wolverhampton’s West Park, one of England’s finest Victorian parks, or a short journey can take you into the beautiful countryside that surrounds the region.

A short bus journey from the city centre, Cineworld at Bentley Bridge offers 14 screens showing the latest releases and Bollywood screenings with discounts for students when you show your NUS card. But you don’t have to venture out of the city centre to see a film: Light House Media Centre, located in the historic Chubb building, shows the best blockbusters and art-house films in an intimate venue.

There’s plenty of nightlife on offer for the 23,000 students that study at the University including bars, nightclubs and music venues that play host to well-known British and international rock and pop artists.

Just down the road in Walsall, you can discover the history of a local industry at the Leather Museum; and the New Art Gallery regularly hosts international exhibitions and has the Garman Ryan collection on permanent display with works from artists including Van Gogh, Monet, Turner, Renoir and Constable.

Telford, famous for its industrial heritage, boasts a World Heritage site at Ironbridge, the Severn Gorge and a fully working Victorian village at Blists Hill.
