28/08/2013

More than 770 National Scholarships were awarded to new UK/EU students due to start at the University in the coming academic year in September.

The scholarship is awarded to high achieving students whose household income in less than £25,000.

This includes seven National Scholarships for care leavers – students who have spent time in care as a child.

It also includes four scholarships for deaf students.

Around 130 Distinction Scholarships have also been awarded. These are given to new UK/EU students who have achieved AAB at A-level or equivalent.

The scholarships are worth up to £3,000 to students in their first year and are made up of: £1,000 in cash, £1,000 off their fees and a further £1,000 fee waiver or £1,000 off accommodation fees.

A total of 44 further scholarships have been awarded to students taking courses in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and earning ABB  grades or equivalent.

These scholarships are worth £3,000 in cash to students in their first year, payable in three instalments.

There are still a number of scholarships and bursaries still available for this year. Visithttp://www.wlv.ac.uk/ and under Study Here, click on Money Matters, and then Scholarships.

Pro Vice Chancellor Jane Nelson said: “It is vital to be able to offer scholarships to students for a number of reasons.

“For those who may come from a low income household, it can make the difference to them choosing to come to University and really help them through their studies.

“Also it’s important to recognise excellence and achievement in a person’s studies.”

For all 2013 full-time undergraduate UK entrants the University also offers a Continuing Achievement Reward, which enables students who successfully complete their first year of study to claim a £1,000 fee waiver when they enrol for the following year.
