Graduate scheme boosts University’s Chinese links

A scheme designed to give graduates the chance to teach English abroad has been launched by the University of Wolverhampton.

The initiative, created in partnership with three higher education providers in China, has seen five University graduates travel to the Far East to teach local students English language skills.

The Chinese institutions include the Hunan University of Science and Technology (HNUST) in Hunan Province; the Eastern International Art College in Zhengzhou; and Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics (LZUFE) in Qinghai Province.

The long term objective of the scheme is to have 40 University graduates teaching abroad for up to two years. Currently the placements are for three to six month periods.

Speaking about the initiative, Jo Gittens, Director, International, said: “Such opportunities for graduates are beneficial for both the partner institution and the individual, so we’re delighted to offer this scheme with our partners in China. We hope to extend this to partners in other countries and as such offer graduates with a broader choice of destinations.

“International experience is key to the University’s internationalisation agenda and fulfilling our aim of our students being global citizens, and the creation and future development of this scheme is an example of our commitment in this regard.”

The graduates currently on the scheme include Hannah Shakespeare and Kirri Porter-White, both based at Hunan; Surdeep Singh and Kellie Bannister, based at Lanzhou; and Kathy Peak, based at the Eastern International Art College.
