Student lands place on prestigious cultural programme

A student from the University of Wolverhampton is celebrating after being chosen for a national project focused on intercultural awareness.

Adam Keane, a second year student in the University’s School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, has obtained a place on the “ParliaMentors” scheme run by the London based charity ‘Three Faiths Forum’ (3FF).

The programme, which began in 2007, sees a diverse range of students come together in trios to organise and create social action projects with the aim of encouraging social responsibility and increased political participation.

Alongside the projects, the students also get the chance to be mentored by an MP. Previous mentors have included the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, and the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP, amongst others.

Adam, from Burntwood, Staffordshire, is currently studying Religious Studies alongside Education Studies at the University.

Speaking about his opportunity with the “ParliaMentors” programme, he said: “I was thrilled when I heard that I’d been successful in obtaining a place on the programme, not only because of the opportunities it presents, but also because it presents an opportunity to create social change in some small way.

“I’m also hoping that this experience will restore my confidence in politicians, as I must admit, I've become somewhat disillusioned with politics lately.”

Since the programme’s launch in 2007, over 200 students from various backgrounds have taken part in the programme along with over 40 parliamentarians as mentors.
