Chartered surveyor honoured by university

Louise Brooke-Smith, President Elect of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology on Tuesday, September 10.

The School of Technology presented the award at a graduation ceremony in recognition of her significant national contribution to the Chartered Surveying profession.

With nearly three decades experience in surveying, Louise, of Birmingham, is set to be made the first female of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors next year.

She said she was delighted and proud to be receiving the award.

“Having worked in the property and construction world for over thirty years, with much of this in the West Midlands, the honour is very much appreciated,” she said.

“The support given by the University of Wolverhampton to property and development in the form of academic research and student support both here in the UK and overseas is well established and admired.

“I have been pleased to have been able to work with various Departments and Schools of the University over the years either with my RICS hat or my planning day-job hat and it has been wonderful to see students join the raft of construction and surveying courses, progress, qualify and then work successfully in the development industry.

“My heartfelt thanks go to my family, work colleagues and the staff at the University for this wonderful award.”

After working in the public and private sectors, both in Great Britain and overseas, she established a Planning and Development Consultancy in Birmingham, UK in 1994.

Today the Practice, Brooke Smith Planning, is listed in the top 10 of independent UK planning consultancies, serving clients across the UK and overseas. It has affiliated offices in Leeds and London.

Louise has served on the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor’s West Midlands Regional Board for some years, sitting as Chairman in 2000. She has also served on the RICS International Governing Council since the mid 1990’s.

Louise is currently President Elect of the RICS and will become the first female President of the Institution in July 2014 – representing 180,000 members, across 146 countries, worldwide.

Louise is married, with two daughters and lives in Birmingham, West Midlands.
