Thousands of students celebrate graduation

03/09/2013

Graduation StudentsThe graduation ceremonies will take place at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, where the students and their families will collect their degree scrolls in cap and gown.

A total of eight ceremonies will be held, starting on Thursday (September 5) featuring students from the School of Art and Design.

The final ceremony will commence on Friday, September 13 with the School of Applied Science.

This year, 10 honorary degrees will be awarded to people who have made huge impacts in their respective professions. Recipients will include smoky-voiced entrepreneur Hilary Devey, famous for her role on BBC’s Dragons Den, legendary soul singer Jaki Graham, former sprinter Kathy Smallwood-Cook and flamboyant singer Kevin Rowland, frontman for Dexys Midnight Runners.

Each ceremony will start with a procession of staff both academic and senior, governors, honorary award recipients and invited guests through the city of Wolverhampton.

After each ceremony the students and their families have been invited to attend a drinks reception in the Harrison Learning centre, the University’s main library, to end their graduation day.

Professor Geoff Layer, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “Graduation is a chance for us to recognise the work, effort and dedication of our students with a celebration in their honour.”

“It is always a special time of year for everyone connected with the University, and I’m delighted that this year is no different.”

“And it is also, with our diverse range of honorary graduates, a chance to award those who have excelled professionally and helped reaffirm the strong reputation of this region and this University.”
