Critically acclaimed Sci Fi author gives University talk

11/04/2018

The University of Wolverhampton is hosting a lecture by a critically acclaimed science fiction author.

Adam Roberts is the author of several science fiction novels including The Real-Town Murders, Bete and The Thing Itself.  He has also written several critical works on science fiction and Victorian poetry and is Professor of 19th Century Literature at Royal Holloway and Bedford University.  He is an expert on Jules Verne and has recently finished reading and writing about HG Wells’ 110 books.

20 students studying for Master’s Degrees in English Literature will be attending the lecture along with Dr Sebastian Groes, Professor in English Literature.

The lecture ‘Sci-Fi and the Contemporary Imagination’ will be held on Thursday 19th April at 6.00 pm at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery (Contemporary Room).  Admission is FREE and the lecture is open to staff, students and members of the public.

Dr Aidan Byrne, Course Leader in English at the Faculty of Arts, said: “Securing high profile, internationally successful authors to speak at the University is really helpful for students studying on our English courses.  The Science Fiction module is on our MA English, and is also available to students on the MA in Popular Culture. Both courses engage with contemporary social and cultural issues through analysing popular texts.

"Science fiction is one of the key genres which examine modern social tensions and changes. As an author of science fiction novels and a critic, Adam Roberts’ lecture will illuminate the ways in which cultures explore their worries through fiction, TV and film. The lecture will therefore be relevant to students of English, Media and culture at all levels.

“It’s a real coup to be welcoming Adam to the Black Country and we’re all looking forward to gaining additional insights into the world of science fiction.”

Anyone interested in attending the lecture should email Dr Aidan Byrne: a.byrne2@wlv.ac.uk for more information.

Anyone interested in studying English or English Literature at the University should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 21st April 2018.
