Funding secured to encourage female students to get active

19/04/2018

Female students are to benefit from extra sports activities after the University of Wolverhampton secured almost £7.5k for new initiatives.

The University is one of 12 nationally to have been successful in applying for funding from Sport England and British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) to tackle inactivity among female students.

The £7,397 project will enable the University to target between 250-450 participants.

The University will deliver a regular activity under UV light which is similar to zumba or clubbercise. It will also explore options around delivering activities that are suitable for students to bring family members or children along.

Another idea is to put on dance themed sessions that incorporate different styles of dance and culture.

Lee Hardwick, Sports Participation Officer at the University, said: “We’re delighted to have received the BUCS Active funding which is part of a national project to tackle inactivity among female students. There are many reasons why students may not be able to participate in sport, so we want to explore ways we can make it easier and encourage people to get involved.”

Cassell Bailey, Sport England, added: “Sport England are delighted to continue our partnership with BUCS and the HE Sector through the delivery of BUCS Active projects. These projects will make a valuable contribution to Sport England’s vision of a more active nation for everyone.  The 12 projects will support our ambition to work and think differently to address the barriers to being more active and contribute to the Government outcomes for sport; physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development, and economic development.”

It is hoped that the project will start in May and continue throughout the year.
