Art graduate exhibits work at prestigious Somerset gallery

26/02/2018

A University of Wolverhampton graduate is showcasing her work at a prestigious exhibition in Somerset.

Claire Buckerfield, from Wolverhampton, graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art in September 2017.  Her work, Composition #4, was nominated by the Head of Fine Art, Dean Kelland, for the annual exhibition held every February at the Atkinson Gallery in Somerset.

The exhibition, which is a contemporary collection of painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and multimedia, showcases work from MA and other Postgraduate programmes across the UK outlining the Atkinson Gallery’s ethos of supporting aspiring artists.

Claire said: “Studying Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton has enabled me to further progress my practice and to better understand its position within the art world.  The course has given me opportunities to exhibit my work professionally and the invaluable support from the tutors has given me confidence and belief in my work.”

Composition #4 is concerned with the insignificant and overlooked and is a site-specific exploration of this. Claire uses existing marks as reference points to build the composition of the piece, for example, dirty marks or old drill holes that have been left behind, as a result each configuration is unique to any given space. These areas are perceived anew by the viewer and become elevated from sites of unimportance to sites of interest.

Claire was previously chosen to exhibit her work in Birmingham as part of New Art West Midlands 2016.  She is currently artist in residence at the Wolverhampton School of Art as well as working on the Made in Wolves project which aims to sell and promote student, alumni and staff artwork through pop up events, art fairs and a forthcoming online shop.

The FREE exhibition is running until 17th March 2018 at the Atkinson Gallery, Millfield Street, Somerset BA16, Monday to Saturday, 9.30 am until 5.00 pm.
