Students go on safari in South Africa

08/02/2018

Students studying for Animal Behaviour and Wildlife Conservation degree courses at the University of Wolverhampton went on safari recently with a field trip to South Africa.

Sixteen students in total, fourteen studying for an honours degree and two Wildlife Conservation Master’s Degree graduates, visited South Africa as part of their course. During their field visit they compiled a comprehensive journal of animal study and collected data to include in written assignments.

The students spent two weeks at Somhkanda Game Reserve, Tembe Elephant Park and Kosi Bay, on the border of Mozambique, as well as visiting the Jozini Dam.

They spent time observing elephants, giraffes, white rhinos and lions, had a rare sighting of a leopard as well as spotting familiar wildlife such as impala, nyala and wildebeest and watching the behaviour of hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

Holly Herzberg, Graduate Teacher on the Animal Behaviour and Wildlife Conservation course, said: “The trip was a resounding success and really opened our eyes to the complexities of black rhino conservation, looking at the best methods moving forward.

“Travelling across the country meant we saw three very different environments and mixtures of biodiversity, giving us a taste of African wildlife which has left many students wanting to go back as soon as possible!”

James Boyd, 27 from County Down in Northern Ireland, said:  “Thanks to the University course, I’ve had the most life changing experience of my life.  I’ve spent two weeks in South Africa and I’ve had the pleasure of being taught by some amazing experts with direct experience in the field who in a short space of time have had a profound influence on my outlook and opinions about conservation in South Africa.

“I’ve also formed new friendships and made new contacts, and more importantly, have had the privilege of getting closer to wildlife than I ever would have thought possible.  It’s been an opportunity of a lifetime that I’ll never forget.”

Other field trips on the course include a trip to India with annual trips to Poland, Slovakia and the Lake District.

Anyone wanting to study in the Faculty of Science and Engineering should register to visit the next Open Day on Saturday 17th February 2018.
