Innovative nursery teaching degree to be launched

26/07/2018

A new degree for nursery teachers is to be launched by the University of Wolverhampton and the London Early Years Foundation (LEYF).

The University of Wolverhampton is set to be the only one in the country to offer a foundation degree following the innovative LEYF teaching methods.

The London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) is a family of 39 community nurseries in London which follow a unique curriculum based on academic research, partnerships with international early years organisations and their own internal research.

The new degree, known as the LEYF higher education staff development programme, will launch in September 2018.

Dr Helen Perkins, Senior Lecturer in Childhood and Family Studies at the University, said: “The University of Wolverhampton is immensely proud to be developing this first innovative degree with the London Early Years Foundation.

“Students on the new degree will study the full LEYF teaching practice, which reflects the organisation’s social enterprise approach and is designed to strengthen the children’s social and cultural capital through language, social opportunities, cultural experiences and friendships.

“The LEYF values are closely aligned to those of the University of Wolverhampton, which as the University of Opportunity emphases knowledge, innovation and enterprise.”

June O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of the London Early Years Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be launching the first LEYF degree in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton. This degree focuses on the unique LEYF pedagogy which will weave through all the mandatory modules.  We have generated significant interest from LEYF staff who are very excited about the prospects of having a national qualification that celebrates the work they do and look forward to rolling it out to every student in the near future.”

The degree will be taught at the LEYF training centre with lectures delivered by LEYF teachers as well as lecturers from the University.

During the degree course students will study the full LEYF approach for children aged from birth to five years.

While the degree will be available initially to LEYF staff, the partners hope to develop the degree to be available as one of the portfolio of Early Childhood Studies degrees at the University.
