Sociologist’s new book tackles racism in higher education

21/06/2018

A new book tackling the topic of racism in higher education institutions and how to challenge it has been published by a University of Wolverhampton academic.

Dr Shirin Housee, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, is the author of ‘Speaking Out Against Racism in the University Space’.‌

The book yields new insights into race and racism in higher education institutions and includes accounts by students from minority groups of their experiences and views.

Dr Housee said: “This manifesto for change shows how institutions can investigate their teaching methods and policies, and decolonize their curriculum. How we listen to the student voice, and the spaces universities provide for students from minority groups to speak freely, are the first steps to making institutions of higher education truly inclusive - the domain of social justice.

“The book sends out the powerful message that learning about racism cannot be just be an academic pastime; we absolutely must equip students to stand up and speak out against racism in all its varied forms and layers in our institutions.”

Dr Housee explores how educators and students can work together to unravel and challenge everyday racist occurrences within their institutions. Drawing on the theoretical and methodological tools offered by black feminism and critical race theory, and the stories told by her students and colleagues, she examines experiences of racism both within and outside universities and highlights the ways in which critical voices within the academy are often framed as the problem rather than the solution.
