13/06/2018

Academics and students from the University of Wolverhampton visited Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany recently.

Professor Nazira Karodia, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University along with Professor Amar Aggoun, Head of the School of Mathematics and Computer Science visited to explore and evaluate potential for further cooperation between the two institutions.

The group visited various laboratories and research projects on both the Aschaffenburg Campus and the Centre for Scientific Services at the Obernburg branch campus.

Senior lecturers and lecturers, Dr Patricia Davies, Dr Liam Naughton, and Dr Andrew Gascoyne, contributed to classes with input into Programming Finch Robots, How to Write Proposals and Publications, Technical English and Exploring the Newton fractal.

Six students were reunited and attended lectures with German students who they had met previously during DataFest events held at the University in Wolverhampton.

Professor Nazira Karodia said: “We've had a strong relationship with Aschaffenburg for the past three years and it was a really useful and mutually beneficial visit. The research activities were really interesting and we were impressed with the laboratory equipment and the quantity and diversity of their research programmes.

“Our main fields of interest fit very well together and we also explored study and work placement opportunities for students in Germany.”

Each year, the University of Wolverhampton organises a data hackathon, DataFest, intended to develop student skills in digitalisation and data analysis. In 2017 and 2018, staff and students from Aschaffenburg participated in the competitions.

The first contact between the two universities was established in 2015 through a common partner in Finland, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. This year, an Erasmus+ agreement for teaching and staff exchange has been signed to formalise this cooperation. Dr Patricia Davies first visited Aschaffenburg in 2016, when she attended the International Project Week.
