Legal eagles take to the stand

School pupils have been given a taste of life in the courtroom at a University of Wolverhampton law competition.

The final of the Regional Schools Mooting Competition took place at the University on 27 March 2018.

School pupils from across the region took part in the ‘moot’ which centred around an area of criminal law and liability for gross negligence manslaughter.

Two students from Thomas Telford School in Telford, Alexander Evans and Kelly Davies, clinched victory with some impressive submissions to an expert panel of judges.

Head of the University of Wolverhampton Law School, Sukhninder Panesar, said: “The Regional Schools Moot competition, now in its second year, is proving to be a real success. It enables sixth form pupils who are studying law to experience the real courtroom drama and inspires them to study law at university.

“Four schools made it to the final and every school presented some very powerful arguments before the judge and there was very little to separate the schools this year.”

The external judges were Lucy Speed and Holly Edwards from Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, accompanied by Head of Department at the University, Margaret Walsh.

Lucy Speed said: “The pupils presented some really excellent points of law and set very high standards.”
