Music student tunes into success with her first single

A University of Wolverhampton student is hitting the right note by releasing her first single on Spotify and iTunes.

Keira Carter, 20 from Birmingham is a third-year student studying for a Popular Music degree at the School of Performing Arts based at the Walsall Campus.

Keira responded to a University brief to compose a song suitable to celebrate the graduating class of 2018 Performing Arts students. Facing stiff competition from her peers, Keira’s song was chosen to mark the occasion.

Her composition, ‘You Light Me Up’, was played at all the University graduation ceremonies, accompanied by a video to celebrate the success of the 2018 graduates.

Keira now has her sights set on reaching a global audience and released the track on Spotify on 28th December 2018.

Hoping to pursue a career in performing or education after her own graduation, Keira is grateful for her training on the degree. She said: “Being given this platform by the University has allowed me to work on my musicianship skills to a professional standard and has given me the access to work with industry representatives and outstanding equipment in order to prepare me for my future career path.”

Steve Cooper, Subject Leader for Popular Music and also a professional musician, said: “The study and craft of song writing is a clear focus for all Popular Music students at the University of Wolverhampton and this includes responding to industry briefs for clients, publishers and artists.

“Keira’s song is a great example of working to a live brief for a client and the track has subsequently been used for several projects across the University. It is great that it will now reach an even wider audience and showcase Keira’s ability as a writer and performer.”

Anyone interested in studying at the School of Performing Arts should visit the next Open Day on Saturday 2nd February 2019.
