Award for museums and heritage expert

A leading figure from the West Midlands museums and heritage sector has been honoured by the University of Wolverhampton.

Former Chief Executive of the West Midlands Regional Museums Council, Kathy Gee, was on the University’s Board of Governors for 12 years and received an honorary fellowship on Friday, 21 September 2018.

The award was presented at a graduation ceremony in recognition of Kathy’s tireless support of the University in her former role as Governor.

She said: “I have enormous respect for the University of Wolverhampton, and it has been a delight to serve, working alongside such dedicated and enthusiastic colleagues. In the challenging times that face Higher Education, I know that it has the skills and confidence to continue to be a major player in the West Midlands region.”

Kathy Gee joined the Board of Governors of the University of Wolverhampton in 2006 and was Deputy Chairman between 2009 and 2018 when she retired.

An archaeologist by training, Kathy has had a long career in museums and heritage. She was first employed as a curator by English China Clays Plc., then went freelance as a Museum Consultant.

After five years working in the independent museum sector, writing and publishing, and researching landscape history for the National Trust, in 1990 she became CEO of the West Midlands Regional Museums Council (latterly the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council West Midlands) before leaving to work freelance again in 2006. She is a qualified leadership coach and a published poet.

Kathy has been extensively involved in the development of heritage thinking and policy development at national level, serving on numerous committees and publishing widely. She was a Trustee of the Heritage Lottery Fund and is currently a Trustee of both the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise. 

The University’s graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday, 13 September to Friday, 21 September 2018.
