University to sponsor Deaffest 2019

The University of Wolverhampton is to be one of the largest sponsors of Deaffest 2019, the UK’s leading Deaf-led Film and Arts festival.
The University is a long-standing supporter of Deaffest, which will take place in Wolverhampton from 17-19 May 2019.
Deaffest is dedicated to supporting and developing the talents of emerging and established deaf filmmakers and artists from the UK and around the world. This year’s theme will be ‘share your story’ and the festival will be celebrating the storytelling tradition by bringing deaf artists, filmmakers and performers together from across the world to explore visual storytelling in all its forms.
University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “The University is delighted to be part of Deaffest, which is always a vibrant and exciting event in the city. Our students, staff and graduates are an important part of the continued success of Deaffest, providing interpreting support between deaf and hearing visitors, participating in the diverse range of activities on offer and volunteering in a number of roles to ensure the festival is a huge success.”
Deaffest Founders and Directors Nikki Stratton and Marilyn Willrich said: “We are delighted to have the University of Wolverhampton as one of our largest sponsors for Deaffest 2019 as they have supported this vital and internationally recognised festival for a long time, their support and presence is highly valued by Deaffest. The festival is open to everyone so come along and join the celebrations, showcases and various activities led by talented deaf filmmakers and artists from all over the world including the UK.”
The 13th international festival will include the popular bustling stalls fair, a showcase of films and documentaries, the 7th Film & TV Awards Gala with live entertainment, the Young Deaffest Award, an exhibition showcasing the works of deaf artists and photographers, workshops for adults and child, the Late-Night Deaf Party with competitions and much more.
Deaffest was first launched in 2006 and is hosted by Zebra Access, a charity dedicated to ensuring that all deaf people both adults and children enjoy equal participation and access without communication barriers.
The University of Wolverhampton is the longest running higher education provider of sign language interpreter education and training and support for Deaf students in the UK, having recently celebrated 25 years since the launch of the BA (hons) Interpreting BSL/English programme.
