Students secure prize in national design competition

Students from the University of Wolverhampton secured second prize in a national Interior Design competition recently.

Six students studying for Interior, Product and Furniture Design degrees at the Wolverhampton School of Art, travelled to London to compete against seven other universities in a one day design project run by the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) – the professional organisation for interior designers in the UK.

The BIID Student Design Challenge is an annual, day long competition for final year university students studying for Interior Design and Interior Architecture degree courses. Now in its fourth year, the competition aims to encourage collaborative work, promote creative thinking and inspire students looking to progress in the design industry.

Rhys Thomas, Interior Design Senior Lecturer at the University, said: “The students were asked to design a headquarters for Rebel Radio, a new youth radio station looking to promote fresh music talent and highlight current affairs that affect British Youth.

“The space needed to be dynamic, accessible and acoustically sound as well as offering different kinds of space including a reception area, recording booths, a performance space and a green room for visiting artists.

“It was a challenging day for the students who were given just six hours to turn the brief into a cohesive design for a panel of judges – stretching their abilities and really making them think about what it might be like to work on a real life project brief for a client. Winning 2nd prize was testament to their ability to work to very high professional standards, under very tense conditions.”

Jade Diggory said:  “This competition has been fast-paced and a fun experience, but it has also been a great learning curve to work to a brief alongside a team and having a great mentor for support which undoubtedly will contribute to my future career.”

The students, Polly Bayliss, Keely Brock, Jade Diggory, Max Holder, Sadie Millermaggs and Armando Rodriguez-Ortega, were supported by a professional mentor, May Fawzy, Design Director and Founder of MF Design Studios in London. The competition was held in the London showroom of Herman Miller, award-winning furniture manufacturer.

Gilly Craft, President of the BIID, comments: “I was so impressed at the high quality of work the students presented this year. The BIID is dedicated to supporting up-and-coming designers as they begin their careers and The Student Design Challenge is the perfect opportunity to discover new talent and provide students with invaluable industry advice.”

Anyone interested in studying for an Interior or Product Design Degree at the University of Wolverhampton should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 2nd February 2019.
