An innovative programme at the University of Wolverhampton to support the recruitment of the next generation of healthcare professionals has received a £50,000 boost.

The Preparing to Succeed programme (P2S) provides students who are interested in a career in healthcare with insights into the world and work of healthcare professionals while at the same time gaining experience of a university environment.

The project has received a grant of almost £50,000 from the Office for Students’ (OfS) Strategic Interventions in Health Disciplines fund.

The P2S programme will be running during October and November 2019. It will involve four days on-site at the University’s City and Walsall Campuses as well as a range of online activities, pastoral and academic support followed by a digital campaign within local colleges.

The University offers a wide range of healthcare courses including nursing, midwifery, paramedic science, podiatry and physiotherapy.

Dr Katherine Birch, Deputy Director of the University’s Institute of Health, said:  “We are delighted to have received this funding from the Office for Students. Helping students to make the right choices and gain confidence early in their studies is critical to their long term success.

“We know that many students are anxious about starting a degree course and, in addition to the main programme, our tutors and some of our current students will be on hand to talk about any particular concerns participants may have and to offer advice and support.

“The P2S programme also aims to increase awareness of the range of different professional roles in health and social care and publicise areas where we know there are shortages of staff.

“We’re currently working with a number of our local colleges to promote the programme and are looking forward to working with them to support their students take the next step in their career.”

In total, ten projects have been awarded a combined £440,000 by the OfS in a nationwide scheme which aims to attract more students to nursing, midwifery and allied healthcare courses – including orthoptics, podiatry, and therapeutic radiography. The fund also aims to stimulate innovation in the delivery of these disciplines. On top of OfS funding, an additional £480,000 worth of resources has been committed by participating universities and partners.
