School pupils went behind the scenes at Wolves FC to experience a day in the life of a professional football club through a University of Wolverhampton and Aspire to HE project.

Students from five Black Country and Telford schools attended the Aspire to HE event at Molineux which encourages pupils to consider higher education.

Staff from the Premier League Club including University of Wolverhampton graduates ran sessions focused on sports science, coaching and commercial activity including marketing to showcase the different career options available.

The 52 Year 12 and 13 students were also taken on a tour of the stadium and club museum during the one-day event on Thursday, 20 June 2019.

Dr Chris Sellars, Head of Partnerships, Department of Sport, said: “The day was really about showcasing to students the various careers available within a professional sports club and the pathways taken by those fulfilling these roles. In addition, the options within higher education that would best allow progress to these careers were highlighted, with the aim of inspiring students to consider these as part of their ‘next steps’. Wolves FC provided invaluable expertise including some of our recent graduates now full-time employees of the Club. We hope the students were inspired and left feeling any of these careers is a possibility for them!”

The schools that took part were Bishop Milner, Abraham Darby, Sandwell Academy, George Salter and Heath Park. A further event took place  at Walsall FC’s Bescot Stadium.

Aspire to HE covers the areas of Sandwell and Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton, and Telford and Wrekin.

The Aspire to HE consortium is made up of the University of Wolverhampton working in partnership with six further education colleges and 39 secondary schools to support informed, ambitious decision making with regard to higher education.
