Thousands of Black Country and Birmingham pupils celebrate graduation

More than 4,500 school pupils will don caps and gowns to graduate from a University of Wolverhampton programme which aims to raise children’s aspirations.

The Children’s University provides innovative and exciting out of school hours learning activities for children and young people aged 7 -14 years.

There will be 29 graduation ceremonies this June and July for 4,700 pupils from 41 schools in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley.

Participants own a Passport to Learning in which they are encouraged to collect hours of learning towards recognised levels of achieveme

Activities pupils can take part in include ‘why uni?’ in Year 6; ‘build a university’ in Years 5 and 6; ‘what’s inside me?’ through the University’s STEM response team, plus events such as SciFest or Sportsfest.

Professor Jackie Dunne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Access and Lifelong Learning) at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The Children’s University is an excellent way of introducing the huge benefits of higher education to primary school children and encouraging them to aim high.

“We are delighted to be able to empower, inspire and nurture the aspirations of our youngest learners because we share their enthusiasm for learning about the world.”

The University of Wolverhampton Children’s University launched in October 2014 and has grown from two schools to 41 in that time period. This summer there will be 29 graduation ceremonies taking place, some in-school and many at the University’s City and Walsall Campuses.
