University urges Giving Tuesday support for Mayoral Scholarship Fund

25/11/2019

The University of Wolverhampton and the Mayor of Wolverhampton are looking to boost donations for local Wolverhampton students as part of the international fundraising day #GivingTuesday.

The University will be urging people to donate to the recently set up Mayoral Scholarship Fund as part of the national day which takes place on Tuesday 3rd December 2019 and is designed to encourage people to do something good for charity.

In May 2019, a graduate of the University, Claire Darke, became Mayor of Wolverhampton and created The Mayoral Scholarship at the University of Wolverhampton which, each year, will enable up to five students who come from Wolverhampton and study at the University, to receive financial assistance to help them with their studies.

Claire Tilt, Head of Alumni and Development at the University, said: “The majority of students at the University of Wolverhampton are local and almost 80% of the 20,000 students who study at the University come from within 25 miles of the City centre. Around 4,500 of those who graduate each year remain around the city and contribute to the local economy.

“We were absolutely delighted that the Mayor wanted to offer support through her charity fundraising efforts for students from the city and we hope to boost donations in the run up to the festive period.”

Councillor Claire Darke, Mayor of the City of Wolverhampton, said: “Sometimes students need support to enable them to achieve their potential, and this is why fundraising initiatives like these are vitally important in providing a financial boost to those who need it the most.

“The Mayoral Scholarship at the University of Wolverhampton will enable up to five students per year to receive assistance. The only stipulation is that they are from the city of Wolverhampton, because we know that our local talent is one of our greatest assets. With your help and generosity to the Mayor of Wolverhampton’s Charitable Fund, you can make a difference in the lives of the next generation of talented students from Wolverhampton. By making a donation on Giving Tuesday, you can help make this scholarship from the city and for the city.”
