Academics STEM the gap in online learning during COVID-19

27/04/2020

Academics from the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Mathematics & Computer Science have launched a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for teachers of maths and computer science.

The course, Enhancing Learning in Computer Science & Maths, has been developed using funding provided by Google under their CS Educator Professional Development Scheme.

The course is specially designed around a collection of problems which straddle the boundary between computer science and mathematics. Each problem includes worksheets which are ready to be used immediately in the classroom. The problems are broken up into introductory (12-14 year olds), intermediate (14-16 year olds) and advanced (16-18 year olds) categories and are suitable for students studying computer science, mathematics or both.

The course is self- paced and is open for registration before its official launch on Monday 4th May 2020.

The development team consists of Dr Liam Naughton, Dr Herbert Daly, Emily Rodden, Jordan Brennan, Abigail Parkes and Dr Andrew Gascoyne. Each section of the course includes video lectures, online self-assessment quizzes and code snippets and worksheets to use in the classroom.

Dr Liam Naughton, Lecturer in Mathematics at the University, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this resource to teachers of computer science and maths at the current time and we’re hugely grateful to Google for funding this project under their CS Educator PD Scheme.

“We have a tremendous range of expertise in the team especially when it comes to online learning. The team have developed some tremendous resources around some fascinating problems. We are particularly lucky to have some recent graduates on the project this year and Emily, Jordan and Abigail have really led the way with some excellent interactive materials. In the current climate we are all having to learn some new tricks when it comes to learning & teaching and they have certainly taught Herbert, Andrew and I a few things.''
