Artsfest Online: Dean Kelland in conversation with James Latunji-Cockbill

Join Dean Kelland in conversation with James Latunji - Cockbill about their involvement with the artist residency at HMP Grendon.

Wednesday 1 July 2020, 11:30am - 12:30pm

James Latunji-Cockbill is a Producer at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham where he manages the artist residency at HMP Grendon, Buckinghamshire. The focus of the residency is towards the development of artistic practice – that of the artist in residence, Dean Kelland, and of the prison’s communities. James facilitates this work by paying particular attention to the project’s national partnerships, organising exhibitions of prisoners’ work and by writing a public programme encouraging reflection on aspects of the residency.

James undertook Film Studies (BA Hons and MA, 2010-15) at the University of Wolverhampton where he developed a keen interest in the moving image and visual art. In 2015, he started working at Ikon, where the gallery’s offsite programmes became a focus.

Dean Kelland is Ikon’s artist in residence at HMP Grendon, Buckinghamshire. Funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust, the focus of the residency is towards the development of artistic practice at HMP Grendon – that of Kelland and of the prison’s communities. For Kelland, the relationship between artist and prison is an exchange of ideas and practices, an ongoing dialogue that informs all aspects of the residency.

Dean is a UK Based Artist who explores portraiture as a performative practice. His process follows an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates performance film, live performance techniques and photography as well as other media and methods.

Dean is also course leader for MA Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton.
