Family and friends support COVID-19 appeal in memory of art graduate

01/06/2020

The husband of a University of Wolverhampton Fine Art graduate has been supporting the University’s Covid-19 fundraising appeal in her memory.

Lesley Goodwin was diagnosed with myeloma, a form of cancer, and passed away, aged 58, in June 2017 just months before her graduation ceremony.

Andy Goodwin, from Wolverhampton, has been posting daily music videos on his social media channels since 22nd March, most of them with adapted lyrics to reflect the current climate.

As the number of views increased, so did the demand from family and friends and they decided to recognise Andy’s hard work by donating to the University’s COVID-19 appeal, which will help manufacture PPE for front line care-workers, as they watched his performances.

He said: “As I posted my 50th video, a friend suggested we try to raise money for charity and when I saw the appeal I knew it would have been close to Lesley’s heart.

“Lesley, and I, had some very memorable times while she was at the University and I am still in touch with some of her fellow students.

“It is important at times such as these that we stay positive and focussed on the good times and supporting others.”

To date, Lesley’s friends and family have donated over £400 to the appeal while watching Andy perform, the equivalent of over 200 face shields.

This isn’t the first time that Andy has supported the University.  In April 2018, he worked with Dr Christian Mieves from the Wolverhampton School of Art to stage an exhibition of Lesley’s work in the Faculty of Art gallery space, with the help of her friends in the faculty.

Lesley studied Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton from 2013 until her illness resulted in her curtailing her studies in spring 2017.  She passed away in June of that year and Andy was able to collect her award in September in her honour.

Andy feels that Lesley’s health needs were always accommodated at the University and he was always made to feel welcome by the staff.  He fondly remembers a day trip to London that Lesley and he organised for her art friends, and a trip to the Venice Biennial Art exhibition that he accompanied Lesley on in parallel to a University trip so that her health needs could be met.

The University’s COVID-19 Appeal has so far received over £8,000 in generous donations to help manufacture PPE to be given to NHS, care homes and other care workers. To donate to the appeal, or for more information, visit www.wlv.ac.uk/covidappeal
