University welcomes cohort of international scholars

08/12/2021

The Global Opportunities office launched the first official International Scholarship Ceremony to officially welcome international students in receipt of prestigious scholarships which this year included recipients of the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship, Commonwealth Shared Scholarships and the Global Opportunities Regional Scholarship.

Nine students celebrated the start of their journey at the University of Wolverhampton in September and joined a celebratory event at Chancellor’s Hall at the University’s City Campus attended by academics from their respective faculties, colleagues from the Global Opportunities Office and Tim Steele, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global Opportunities.

Two students from Nigeria and Tanzania, were funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Six students from Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil and Peru were successful in securing their scholarships through the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM after going through a very competitive process. The aim of those scholarships is to help address the under-representation of women in STEM benefiting women from Latin America.

The ninth scholar is from Nigeria and was awarded the Global Opportunities Regional Scholarship.

Each student has graduated in their chosen fields at universities in their home countries and has now been successful to further their education at Master’s level at the University of Wolverhampton.

Students will study the following MSc courses; Artificial Intelligence, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Advanced Technology Management (Sustainability), Programme and Project Management, International Master’s of Business Administration with Professional Placement.

Sergine Monple, Director of Global Opportunities at the University of Wolverhampton said: “We would like to extend a special welcome to our scholars who chose to study with us at the University of Wolverhampton. I speak for the entire university in saying that we are delighted that you made the decision to join us and would like to congratulate you on your awards.  Welcome to the University of Opportunity - I wish you every success and I am confident that you will find it an immensely rewarding experience.”

Julia Querios Vieria, British Council Women in STEM scholarship studying MSc Advanced Technology Management said: “I’m so pleased to be able to continue doing the work I was doing in Brazil and proud to have the opportunity to work with people in the same field as myself to achieve the best of my ability.

“Here at the University, I have the facilities, the technology, the laboratories and professors who are working in the industry as well as being academics – so I’m learning from the best and getting the best of both worlds.”
