BUILD THE FUTURE – Bethany takes control of her future with a Degree Apprenticeship

09/02/2021

“The Degree Apprenticeship gives you the background knowledge in a theoretical approach. Assignments based around the Building Regulations help to teach us the reasoning behind our roles and improve our knowledge, as we carry out our site inspections on live projects.”

Bethany Ellis, 30 from Salisbury in Wiltshire, is taking control of her future by studying for a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Control at the University of Wolverhampton, with the studies being funded by her employer, New Forest District Council, through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Bethany is a Trainee Building Control Surveyor doing Building Control and is in her second year of studies out of four on the Building Control Degree Apprenticeship.

“I started my job a couple of years ago with the Council and had no idea what building control was and where it would take me.

“The opportunity to study for the Degree Apprenticeship brings in both the practical side of Building Control with on-site inspections, office based working with other Building Control team members, as well as working alongside other Building Control students from all over the country. We are able to come together collectively to discuss and learn from what we face in our different areas of the country and the theoretical side, which is taught by the University, as we undertake our journey into Building Control.

“This course gives you the background knowledge in a theoretical approach. Assignments based around the Building Regulations help to teach us the reasoning behind our roles and improve our knowledge, as we carry out our site inspections on live projects.

“Building Control is an important part of the construction industry, that going forward will be facing some changes with regards to competency of the surveyors. Coming from an architectural design background myself, this was a natural step into furthering my skills. Working with the New Forest District Council Building Control Team and taking part in the degree course will help me become a competent Building Control Surveyor.

“Support from my team has been invaluable while on my journey to becoming a Building Control Surveyor. I am able to learn so much from their local knowledge of the area we work in and the knowledge they have personally built up over time in the role. Coupled with the lectures provided by the university, I am confident that my transition from a trainee to a competent surveyor will be a breeze.”
