BUILD THE FUTURE – Luke builds a career in construction with Degree Apprenticeship

09/02/2021

“The opportunity to study for Chartership as well as the degree is revolutionary, it allows you to join the best of the best within your chosen profession and will open up amazing opportunities for the future.”

Luke Capewell, 26 from Wolverhampton, is building a career in construction with a Chartered Surveying Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton, funded by his employer, Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Luke is currently Assistant Surveyor in the Housing Maintenance Team after being promoted nine months ago and he is now in the last year of his three-year Degree Apprenticeship.

In his current role he regularly visits sites to meet with contractors and measures completed works with a focus on renovating empty homes.

After leaving school with better GCSEs than he was anticipating, Luke had no idea what he wanted to do with his career, so chose to undertake a Plumbing Apprenticeship for a year before being made redundant. He then studied for a Business Administration Apprenticeship qualification at Levels 2 and 3 before embarking on a Higher National Certificate in Construction Management at the University of Wolverhampton.

When he saw that the University was offering the Degree Apprenticeship opportunity, he took it immediately.

He said: “I thought I was done with learning after I finished my exams at school, but when you find a career you want to pursue, you find that you need the academic background to support this. I believe I’ve taken the long route, but I now feel that I’m on track and where I should be.

“There’s lots of support on offer both at the University and at work, and it helps that I’m working with colleagues who have also completed the degree previously.

“The opportunity to study for Chartership as well as the degree is revolutionary, it allows you to join the best of the best within your chosen profession and opens up amazing opportunities for the future.”

“The course is great and I find that the more advanced modules I complete, the more they relate to my work. The in class learning and the practical aspect complement each other very well and I’d definitely recommend studying for a Degree Apprenticeship to anyone.”
