BUILD THE FUTURE – Mozammil bridges the clinical and management gap

10/02/2021

“The support from my employers – both RWT and NHS England – has been crucial in helping me with my career prospects. I am really aiming high now and as far as I can see, there are no limits and this qualification will support that.”

Mozammil Ramzan, 27 from Birmingham, is leading the way to bridging the gap between clinical and management experience by studying for a Senior Leader Master’s Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton.

Mozammil has recently secured a job as a Continuing Healthcare (CHC) Independent Review (IR) Manager at NHS England & NHS Improvement. The NHS is funding his studies through the Apprenticeship Levy. In his new role, Mozammil manages a team that organises independent review panels for people who apply for funding to receive out of hospital care.

Mozammil followed the traditional route of study by securing GCSEs and A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology before studying for a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Therapeutic Radiography. His ambition was to work in the medical profession, and he secured a job at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) in Wolverhampton as a Senior Radiographer.

He said: “My ambition was to work in the medical profession in a clinical role but during my time at New Cross Hospital I also took on additional roles and responsibilities which added to my professional development with courses in Health & Safety and Manual Handling which gave me a glimpse of what a business management role might look like.

“I decided to apply for the Degree Apprenticeship, and whilst it was challenging at first because I was in a patient-facing role, the studies definitely helped me to secure this new management role which is a step up for me and has put me on the path to greater things.”

Mozammil was one of the first Degree Apprentices on the Senior Leader Master’s Course and will graduate later this year after studying part-time for two years whilst working full-time.

He added: “I really enjoyed the Apprenticeship and would highly recommend it. The competencies guide you and it has helped me set realistic goals to achieve. Networking is also really useful as you’re learning with leaders and managers of corporations across all kinds of businesses both public and private sector.

“I’ve learned how to adapt my management style linked with a lot of the theories I learned on the course. I now apply those skills in the workplace and it’s really interesting to see the leadership models and styles working in action. I was unique on the course because I was one of the very few people working in a clinical role at the time, and it really inspired me to push further in my career and apply for the management position I’m in now.

“The support from my employers – both RWT and NHS England – has been crucial in helping me with my career prospects. I am really aiming high now and as far as I can see, there are no limits and this qualification will support that.”
