Scholarship helps with the mechanics of starting a new career

A University of Wolverhampton student has been gifted a scholarship boost to help her with the mechanics of studying.

Rebecca Tarr, 22 from Cannock, who is studying for a Mechanical Engineering degree in the University’s School of Engineering, has been awarded £1,000 by an anonymous local donor.

Rebecca has recently secured a Graduate Building Services Engineering position at Laing O’Rourke and her aim is to work towards professional accreditation and become a Chartered Engineer.

She will use the Scholarship money to prepare for the world of work, ensuring that she has the right equipment, appropriate clothing and accessories for her new job which she is due to start in the summer.

The Women in Engineering Scholarships, which have been awarded to four female students this academic year, will help in supporting and encouraging the students as part of the University’s commitment to promoting women in science and engineering.

Rebecca was always interested in Maths and Art and studied Product Design and Art and Design at school.  She studied Maths and Physics at A Level and was part of the Engineering Education Scheme, securing a place on the Jaguar Land Rover – Women in the Know scheme.

Rebecca said: “During my time at university, I have completed various design-based projects both in a team and individually which have allowed my creative side to thrive. Studying this course has also integrated my love for Maths and has furthered my passion for engineering.

“I have expanded my theoretical engineering knowledge, extended various Mathematical skills within modules that I have studied including Structural Mechanics and Stress Analysis, and Machines Design and Reliability and have developed technical skills by using CAD software including Solid works, ANSYS and MATLAB.

“Studying Product Design and Art and Design at GCSE showed me how rewarding making and developing my own ideas can be.”

Rebecca is in her third year and will graduate later this year.

Anyone interested in studying at the University of Wolverhampton, should register for one of the forthcoming Virtual Open Days.
